3D Modelling and Animation

In 2022, I began learning 3D modelling and animation using Blender, a free open source animation software, and was considering pursuing a career in animation. However I eventually decided to focus on engineering and stopped using Blender, so I never became exceptionally good at it. But I still learnt a lot and would like to showcase some of my work.

My Very First Project

This was my first attempt at making something in Blender. I followed Polyfjord's robotic arms tutorial and decided to make my own version. It sucks. It's poorly animated, doesn't have any textures, isn't lit properly, and the models aren't made very well. But it was a start, and it inspired me to keep learning and practicing.

Albie

This is another of my early projects, a small robot I named Albie. I had figured out how to use basic textures, and gotten a bit better at modelling and animation. For this project I wanted to try out expressions, so I rigged his eyes to be easily adjustable and tried creating a few simple expressions.

Port

Another robot, this one named Port. I had just learnt how to use particles and wanted to make something using them, and was in the process of learning how to use Blender's geometry nodes system, which I used to make the portal.

Harold

Can you tell I like making robots? I wanted to model something a little more complicated, and ended up making Harold. It was not until after I'd fully rigged him that I realised the computer I was using at the time was not very powerful and rendering an animation of him would've taken significantly longer than my previous projects. So instead of animating him I just made a collection of image renders of him and Albie.

Mechanical Creature Kit

I bought Polyfjord's Mechanical Creature Kit, an asset pack of mechanical parts, metal textures, rigs, etc. designed for making photorealistic mechanical creatures. I made many small projects using this asset pack, but here are my two favourite.

Brassback

A mechanical beetle full of as many moving parts as I could cram into it. It isn't rendered very well, but besides that, I'm very happy with it.

Scrap Dagger

This was one of my only attempts at photorealism, a small dagger made of screws and bolts and other bits of scrap.

Welcome Animations

For most of my exhibitions I would make a short welcome animation to put on the first slide. Here are a few of my favourites.
